How has the Music Industry changed with digital media?

The music industry has changed a lot with digital media. Now the music comes out a lot faster and it’s coming from all directions every single day. When I was growing up you can get any song for free by download. Now with the streaming networks like apple music and Tidal, the music is harder to download. More of the bigger artists are being protective over their music. For example in April the artist Drake released his album “Views”. Everybody was waiting until the day it was released to listen to the album. This means that nobody was able to download it for free before it was released. This is very different from my childhood, where I can get an album weeks before it was released for free. The second article talks about how Tidal set up their company with artists so that they can hold equity within the company. This is great because these artists put their heart and soul into their music and they should make more income off their music. What you see now is a lot of artists living off concert income instead of their music because people are getting it for free. I think digital media is better for the artists because the fans can get their music through their phone’s and tablets. The physical copy of an album is gone. Now you can get everything digitally, which is great for the artists. The music industry is in a better place because now they can protect their music digitally.

Music and Streaming Services

How is digital media changing the music industry ?

Digital media has extremely changed the music industry. If we go back years ago, music was only available via vinyl and then many years after music were available thanks to CDs. At that time the only way to listen music was to buy the album of each artist, so the business model was clearly defined.
Nowadays streaming service has changed everything. Applications allow people to have access to millions of music.
Articles speak about the late arrival of Apple into streaming services. But they bought beats (by Dr Dre) which was the largest acquisition in its history that will help them “play catch-up with rivals that offer subscription-based music services”.
But even today we don’t need anymore to buy the album of each artist but only to have an online access and get music for free because other than applications proposed by spotify or Apple, you have some free applications that allow you to listen songs from different artists and different album, for free.
As we can see in the article 2, this leads to the fact that the work of artists is not well recognized and they are not getting paid fairly that’s why Jay-z has decided to invest $54 million to buy music streaming service Tidal.

With these new streaming services one of the major question is : What will be the business model of artists that write and make songs ?
In the article 2 we have a strong example. Indeed we can read that even avicii and Aloe Blacc’s hit song “Wake Me Up” had more than 168 million streams on Pandora since its release in 2013 but its three songwriters were paid only $12,359.
The problem with streaming services is that if you don’t have any internet access you can’t listen to music anymore and people who still wants to listen without paying will be “forced” to download the songs!
Also, rewards for artists are mainly based on the number of albums sold over the year, but how to be fair towards some artists if people didn’t buy their album but they listened only through streaming services?
So we also have to change the way how artists are rewarded and we might take into account the number of people who listened the music or album through streaming services.
On the other hand it could be an opportunity for young artists who didn’t have the resources to produce their music and to distribute it all over their country or even all over the world, to share their music and be famous.

How is Digital Media changing the music industry?

The music industry has grown in the recent coming years through the advancements of digital media. Digital media plays all sorts of pros towards music exposure and discovery. Music industries of all genres and companies now have a platform in where their pieces can be available and viewed by a larger community.

In the article of New York Times Online, entitled “Apple to Pay $3 Billion to Buy Beats” by Brian X. Chen, it explains how prosperous the company Beats has came about and explains further how another large company apple came in agreement to buy out Beats. Beats, created by producer Dr. Dre, were already doing well for what it was before the company Apple bought out. In my opinion, Apple made an intelligent choice in buying Beats because Apple products and Beats quality sound play hand and hand towards each other. Dr. Dre made one of the largest deals ever as Apple dropped 3 billion dollars to purchase beats. Also it was noted in the article that most of the money for the deal was given in cash… 2.6billion (That’s a sh*t ton of MONEY.)!

In the other article, “Apple Music may not steal you from Spotify, but it can still win the streaming battle” by Jacob Kastrenakes, it mentions how apple has created a knew option where users can stream music. There are other applications like spotify and Pandora where users can stream music. Apple receives a huge advantage as users do not have to download extra applications because Apple will now have all features within one section of the phone.

This whole situation reminds me of a quote, “Pressure can either bust pipes or make diamonds.” I believe this quote means in relation to the articles we just read, that people or companies can go either way… As the world changes, if the company, product, or person is good enough, there work and function will show for itself. Pressure can get to anyone and it is up to whomever is up for the challenge to either settle for where they are or make adjustments or changes to where they can determine their destiny.

The Ever-Changing Music Industry

Digital media has almost completely changed the music industry. The newest craze is streaming music for only a few dollars each month. Apple has made the lasting power of music streaming services expand because of Apple Music. Everybody thought Apple Music was late to the game, but after their launch, that’s all millions of iPhone users are using to listen to their music. The exclusivity of Apple Music and other streaming services, like Tidal, have made the business side of the industry more complex. Record deals are being negotiated differently but they don’t matter much anymore, because people can just put their albums up for streaming. People are now more likely to listen to music from unsigned artists because they don’t have to pay for the entire album or an individual song. Streaming services are also drawing up their own contracts with artists now to try to beat each other. For example, Tidal has the likes of Beyoncé,Rihanna, and Kanye. On the flip side, Apple Music has artists like Taylor Swift. Promotion is no longer an issue either. Artists don’t need to go through weeks of promo for a music video. All they have to do is say when it’s dropping and what service it’ll be premiered on and people watch. To touch on the issue of artist payment, payment for music is also getting more attention. This is mainly due to the revolutionary letter that Taylor Swift wrote to Apple Music that led to her contract with them. Apple Music wasn’t going to pay artists for the first few months that they were giving away a free trial because it was supposed to be just a trial. Swift, however, pointed out that artists are already struggling with getting the pay they deserve from streaming services and other digital uses of their music. Because of this, Apple changed their minds and paid their artists. With this new wave of digital media in music, people are respecting music more and artists don’t have to put up with the corruption that plagued the industry for decades.

Week 4 Music and Streaming

WHOA! I must say this is an interesting topic that I truly believe can be based straight off of an option and not even involve any sources. Mainly because most, if not all of us lived through the transition of music. In my opinion music began its transition when Apple came out with iPods. Of course we had iTunes, but we also had music websites that let us download the music for free not to mention some of these sites gave us viruses but we happened to still continue being loyal to these sites just so we wouldn’t have to pay for the music. Before Apple, one of the main sources for downloading free music was Limewire. EVERYONE knew what Limewire was until and even after the site was shut down because downloading music for free is illegal. So with all of that being said and done, the artist and song writers are losing money, nobody even buys albums anymore. According to the article Music Streaming Demands New Wave of Licensing Rules since music has started streaming, song writers aren’t getting paid fairly. Their basically getting chump change for songs that are popular because of the government. Which I must say I am not surprised about but if the artist songs are at the top of the charts, shouldn’t the song writer get almost as much money as the artist being that they’re the ones who wrote the hit song? Every business has its scams, in this case it’s the artist and writers losing money due to streaming and the song writers losing a large amount of money because of it. So maybe it has gotten to the point where the artist is only looking out for their own income, I wouldn’t be surprised because us Americans are selfish. They also stated that Jay-Z bought out streaming service Tidal because he’s fed up with the lack of control artist have over the music business. Maybe that’s why some artist release things only on Tidal and no other site for us to maybe pay for the release. But who really knows?

How is Digital Media changing the music industry?

I think digital media is changing the music industry both positive and negative way. Before there was internet i remember we had to go out and buy CD’s at the store if we wanted to listen to the music of our favorite artist, i remember only liking a couple of songs from that album and still had t pay the full amount for the those couple songs which was about $15 each CD, Now that we have all these streaming services we get to chose what we listen to.I use Apple streaming services to listen t my music for like $20, i think its awesome because i save to my library my favorite artist, i get to listen to songs that i listened to when i was in junior high which is cool. With Digital Media listeners become more open to different genre of music before you’d be stuck into listening to just on genre but with the changes that music industry has taken it also made us the listeners more open to listening to rock, salsa, pop, electric and many more. i can barely think of any negatives for the listeners just the monthly fee we have t pay which i don’t mind because i am a music lover. On the other Hand on the article ” Music Streaming Demands New Wave of licensing Rules”, they talk about how unfair the music industry is to writers. One example they used was Avicii hit song “wake me up” which had more than 168 million views on pandora and how each songwriter were payed, which was completely unfair to them. it also talks about the new laws the industry has made to try and make everything fair for all. These are things the listeners don’t get to see the behind the scene, i think to many streaming services are out there to be treating them unfair, the more streaming the more money.

How is digital media changing the music industry.

Digital media is changing  the music industry  by allowing song writers  and music  composer to insist on renegotiating  the  1909 Copy Writes Act. Under the old  copy write  act , the music  licensing system forced

song writers  to let  others use there music  at a very low fixed rate. Now in a new era  where  technology has taken  over the  music industry, and streaming, digital pod cast and Apple products are in high demand, musician  and song writers  want  to be rightfully compensated  for there work with an increase of more than twelve cents on the dollar.

Not only has the sequence of lyrical content, genres, and it’s many forms of deliverance changed within the last 20 years.  The music industry is no longer conducted at firms, contracts aren’t always negotiated in person, and music is no longer on cassettes. Due to the high accessibility of mobile phones; consumer are now able to download and/or use services provided on these devices which varies from music, games, magazines, books, all now available, digital, and mobile.  With the high accessibility to these different music search engines, such as Pandora. Songwriters have been losing a lot of money. For example, Avicii and Aloe Blaccs’s wrote hit song “Wake Me Up” had more than 168 million streams on Pandora since it’s released in 2013, it’s three songwriters were paid only $12,359. Music streaming engines has lowered the income revenue for songwriters. These disappointing payoff is a result of the Copyright’s act  which allowed anyone to sell copies of songwriters music without permission as long as they paid the composer a fee of two cents per copy. Evidently leaving songwriters with little to no pay. However, with all of the confusion surging over streaming music apps and the buying and selling of Beats to Apple, a new adversary had arisen. Apple by well then expanded its rehash system by entering the streaming music business. Apple swoops in replacing streaming music apps, by finding incentives for consumers to switch over to there streaming service. Now making apple a big contender in the business.  This service is built within each iPhone, and nowadays everyone has one. APPLE WINS !

Siri play….

I guess I should begin this by saying I don’t listen to music anymore. I don’t have Spotify or Pandora, or any music streaming app. If music is playing around me, then yeah sure, I’ll listen to it. But on average, I can go weeks if not more without hearing any music.

But streaming is the now when it comes to digital distributions. There’s Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, and the aforementioned music apps.

Streaming services changed everything. We’re no longer buying cd’s or dvd’s, we’re no longer watching tv when the shows actually airs, we wait till it’s streamable.

The three articles talk about Apple and it’s late jump into streaming music, and the small amount of money artist make with streaming apps. “One prime example of this phenomenon is that even though Avicii and Aloe Blacc’s hit song “Wake Me Up” had more than 168 million streams on Pandora since its release in 2013, its three songwriters were paid only $12,359.” Chicago Tribune

How can this change moving forward? Business mogul and artist Jay-Z spent $54 million to buy music streaming service Tidal. This allows artists to serve as equity holders and have a much better opportunity to make money from their own music.

With Apple now in the picture, they can try something new and different. There’s nothing that really separates music streaming services as of right now. Apple has the opportunity to once again stay ahead of the curve, like they once did with itunes. It’ll be interesting to see what new ideas Apple and their new purchase of Beats  brings to the table.

A combination of audio and video streaming services could be a start in separating themselves from the competition. Or something a little more simple, more exclusive content

The Music Industry and Digital Media

Anissa Mayhew

According to the three articles I read about the music industry and the effects that digital media has on it I would say that all these company’s that offer digital media are all in competition with Apple.  Apple is a hegemony, that wants to collaborate with smaller company’s to make Apple more powerful.  Traditional ways of obtaining music are becoming obsolete. IPods, mp3 players, and cd’s are a thing of the past. Now it’s all about streaming music off your phone and downloading music Apps. that you pay for. It’s all about convenience and on the go. Apple has so many products to offer when it comes to the content delivery system. Apple has it own music app that’s already downloaded for you in your phone when you get it. Apple just brought the headphone for 2 billion dollars from Dr. Dre to provide that latest and best quality headphone for it users. But people also gravitate to the less expensive service that do the same thing and apple services are 10.00 a month. spotify another music downloading service gives you a longer free trial in hopes that you become hooked. Me personally I have and IPhone and the beats by apple and I must say I refuse to pay for music. I have a free app on my IPhone (Spinrilla) that allows me to download the newest Hip Hop & R&B absolutely free of charge. However just like the library’s, which allow people to take the book out for free, the authors and artist gets cheated out of money that they should be making. Jay-Z got tired of the unjust treatment toward hard working artist and decides to buy Tidal a music streaming company for $54 million dollars to allow artist to have more control over their music. According to article number two, music artist are treated the worst when it comes to being compensated for their work.
