What is the next big thing in Digital Media?
When thinking about the future, I came up with a lot of different ideas for what will happen with technology and digital media. I stood with two ideas that I thought would be convenient for people and also cool. One being different products and another dealing with what everyone loves so much…. Social media.
- Technology
I believe the future of technology will consist of improved accessories that we already have, but in a new form. Accessories such as keyboards or trackpads for your computer will no longer be physical, but holographic. Computers will also improve a great deal, not needing a monitor to see the display of any work being done on a computer. The information you put into a computer will soon be at the tips of your fingers… literally. The data in your computer will be somewhat physical, in a way that it’s able to move around and seen in a different perspective that is three-dimensional and can be transported to any place you please. This can be a new way for people to present new ideas in work environments or simply create an idea for a hobby you have (drawing, photography, graphic design) and show to your friends or family.
These concepts are simple object ideas that can be used for anyone that has a computer, or tablet. People will grow to like this concept because it’s easy to assemble and have less accessories to get/ worry about. Usually, a keyboard, mouse or trackpad must be charged or replaced due to water damage or Bluetooth issues. But holographic accessories for your computer will be easy in a way that no harm can be done to it, and it will be less pieces to a computer. Your computer will only need the monitor to see what you are doing, obviously. But the bottom of the monitor will project the hologram (in any color desired) onto the surface, showing an image of a keyboard. Sensors pick up where your hand is going and display on the monitor the keys you are pressing. “The keyboard hardware is very simple, only three parts are required; one camera, one laser to project the keyboard pattern and a line laser for key input detection.” The good thing with this also is there is no need to use Bluetooth; the projector for the hologram is already installed into the monitor. This would be a digital object, aimed for anyone and everyone’s use. Daily use; a day at work, school or home.

The monitor will also be able to take information, graphs and whatever data you are presenting or trying to share with a group of people (business pitch for example), and put it in a form that is seen as 3D. It will allow you to control where things are laid out or placed; like your hand is the mouse. This product will be aimed for more business type people, people that are creating ideas, starting a new project, or trying to build their own business. People will like it cause it will be a more efficient way to showcase your ideas to your audience. The video is a good example of how the monitor image movement would be, imagine literally using your hands to take the image off the screen and viewing it in a holographic 3D form. See how he moves information, expanding and shrinking, sliding images.
My last concept for isn’t related to computers, but more with people’s phones. Face timing or calling will also is holographic. It will feel like the person is with you, but they’re not. Your phone will send a 3D image of the person you are on the phone with and two people will communicate as if you were with each other. And that is exactly why people will like it, especially people that are away for college or moved out of the country and can’t see their families. This will make people feel closer to home; like they never left them. This 3D calling will be easy to use, and easy to learn/ get use to for people that aren’t too tech savvy. This concept will be different completely because we don’t have 3D holographic calling to this day. The example I below shows that this idea will make your calls more personal, of course, this will be an option. Not all your calls will require you to use this feature. It will be an option much like facetime, but with your whole body. You see the girl put her phone down in order to use the holographic call, it will be very similar. I was really trying to think of a way to not have to put your phone off the ground in order to use this feature… But where else would the hologram come from? That idea is still in progress, but for now, this would be how your 3D holographic calling would be.
- Social Media
Now with my next idea, since people are so consumed with their phones and social media, I believe the next big thing will be social media being a part of a person, internally. This will be a digital idea along with a service. The amount of likes someone gets, followers and your popularity will show just by looking at someone. Society will insert a type of lenses in our eyes that will show us who a person is, what they like and the type of personality they have. Instagram or something very similar will be required of everyone, because your profile will be a part of you; it will now define you. When people look at you, they will know your interest and how well known you are, people’s reputation will be more of an importance. This idea, people may or may not like it, some may say it’s too personal; some may be worried about their reputation. But this is where social media is leading to anyways… Someone’s information is so easy to access nowadays. Google a person and everything they associate with will come up, their Facebook, Instagram, Twitter. This will be for everyone since information is already out for everyone to see, this would make it more organized and more safe, to be able to put out information that is supposed to be seen. This can also control the amount of pictures or videos that get leaked with no permission. People will go about their day interacting with one another and based on that interaction, you rate how you felt about the interaction. It will bring a sense of honesty to people. The example I use below shows that, but what I wouldn’t do is use your “popularity” as a source of income or I wouldn’t let it define your class or status. It will merely be another form of Instagram… but improved, and more technical. Not only will you have your profile on your phone, but it will be with you throughout your day with everyone you meet.
So what makes these concepts stand out from others? Well ideas are similar to these but not it at all. My ideas are to make things easy for people, to bring people together, and to create and show ideas to others in a more dynamic way. These new technology ideas will be more up to date and interactive. This can be used for daily use to, school and work. This can get rid of extra asseccories that have to be brought separately from your computer. Think of the monitor idea… Everything will come into one device, no need to buy a projector for presentations or watching movies. No need to fix your keyboard or mouse, no need to worry about bluetooth or batteries. But for my last idea, with social media, that was simply a prediction I can see happening. It happens already, without the technical aspect of it. People thrive for “likes”, popularity, to be “famous.” Your facebook, instagram and other social media define who you are, information about someone can be found easily. So why not where it on you? (Not literally.)

Hi Alexis, good ideas here but this paper needs to be longer – about twice as long. Also, I need to see more research in the paper with references, citations, and quotes backing up your ideas.
