I guess I should begin this by saying I don’t listen to music anymore. I don’t have Spotify or Pandora, or any music streaming app. If music is playing around me, then yeah sure, I’ll listen to it. But on average, I can go weeks if not more without hearing any music.
But streaming is the now when it comes to digital distributions. There’s Netflix, Hulu, HBO Go, and the aforementioned music apps.
Streaming services changed everything. We’re no longer buying cd’s or dvd’s, we’re no longer watching tv when the shows actually airs, we wait till it’s streamable.
The three articles talk about Apple and it’s late jump into streaming music, and the small amount of money artist make with streaming apps. “One prime example of this phenomenon is that even though Avicii and Aloe Blacc’s hit song “Wake Me Up” had more than 168 million streams on Pandora since its release in 2013, its three songwriters were paid only $12,359.” Chicago Tribune
How can this change moving forward? Business mogul and artist Jay-Z spent $54 million to buy music streaming service Tidal. This allows artists to serve as equity holders and have a much better opportunity to make money from their own music.
With Apple now in the picture, they can try something new and different. There’s nothing that really separates music streaming services as of right now. Apple has the opportunity to once again stay ahead of the curve, like they once did with itunes. It’ll be interesting to see what new ideas Apple and their new purchase of Beats brings to the table.
A combination of audio and video streaming services could be a start in separating themselves from the competition. Or something a little more simple, more exclusive content
