Social media platforms, offer a variety of personalization tools, which can attract users to customizing their profile however they choose. This article “How the technological Design of Facebook Homogenizes Identity and Limits Personal Representation” extracts the potential things people can go through when participating investing time in Facebook. Mentally social media can influence you in many different kinds of ways. It was once said by an anonymous author that you are the company you keep.” This quote relates to this social media platform because as a user you are able to add many friends and follow whom ever you choose due to interest. With interest, a person can either attempt to go for a look they hope to look like or become more informed towards a certain feeling they hope to feel. Access to the Internet greatly alters your state of mind. It was said in the article that people often develop a multi personality through the creation of their social media accounts. Through a subconscious click, a person can slowly turn into a certain person online and in person be the complete opposite. This kind of reminds me of the show Cat Fish on MTV with director Neiv, in where people online date and when they meet for the first time they appear to be completely different on how they learned online of how each other was to be. It is unfortunate that the Internet and social media platforms like Facebook can do that to a person. It is also unfortunate that we have a lot of people around the world that are insecure about them and are not able to create real personal relationships with people. People are social animals in where to keep a sane state of mind, they need to speak to someone.

Facebook Homogenizes Identity

Social Media

Before Facebook was popular there was MySpace. Although you can pick you’re your background, the format and the setup remains the same. Facebook took away more of your creativity. Everyone’s profile is the same. The software for Facebook Does not give people the option to express themselves s through their profile. The only thing that makes us different on Facebook is the content that we post. We are product generation “Like” so your image contributes to the creativity your factor on Facebook, that basically the only thing that makes us different on this site, so it is safe to say that Facebook homogenizes identity. Your Profile and you cover photos are what we are limited to in terms of personal representation. Like “when a prospective user visits Facebook’s homepage to sign up for a new account, they are asked six preliminary and mandatory questions. Those questions are 1) first name, 2) last name3) email, 4) password, 5) birthday, and 6) gender. These limited choices exclude a set of people who don’t fit within them, namely those who are transgender”. Facebook on the other hand, has many resources such as video chat, money transactions, Facebook live, selling and promoting your business, for news, inventions, and more. With all the technology and software updates I hope Facebook will one day allow their users to be more free, like what if I don’t want a profile picture, what if I don’t want to be found by my first and last name I should have a choice. #MoreFreedom4Facebook.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Is everyone online social? What does it mean to be online in 2016?

Online social media is used to market, sale, promote, and socialize. The use of online social media varies from big corporations and businesses to displayed visuals of the public in their everyday lives. I wouldn’t say that everyone on social media are social, some may use social media websites such as Facebook,Twitter, and Instagram just to communicate with family, friends, peers, and associates. However in order to thrive on social media, The key is to socialize in the five fundamental ways of doing so would be choice, creation, curation, conversation, and collaboration. With these five habits and/or tools, your social media page will be booming, with thousands of likes and views. With this attention you can receive either good feedback and bad feedback. We all know everyone has their opinion.
To be online in 2016 means you have to be willing, open, and smart with your limitations on what you present to the public. As for the factor exist of a possible misinterpretation of what is posted; being conscious of the idea that what you post can be viewed by employers .
Benjamin Glosser explained in depth from a business stand point in stating, “the company employs its tools of singular identity, limited self-description, and consistent visual presentation in order to aggregate its users into reductive chunks of data. These data describe people not as the complex social and cultural constructions that they are, but instead as collections of consumers to be marketed to and managed.”
A better way to simplify this would be agenda setting, as like any form of media there’s a reason for everything. If there’s a control on whats presented on social media, it controls what is actually important and discussed. For instance, the debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump has been very crucial to the future of the US, however just weeks ago instead of the debate being the cover of the New York Times, a story on Jennifer Aniston was produced and published pertaining to the splitting/separation/divorce of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. This was no coincidence.

Social Media and the effects.

If someone were to ask me, when is the best time to be alive? I would say right now. The time of the digital world has no boundaries. We are limited to nothing. We have all the necessary resources at our finger tips. We have high speed internet, smartphones, and tablets to cater our everyday needs. We have social sites like Twitter and Facebook to give us the most up to date news with live and raw uncut footage. Finding out what is happening during a natural disaster or this years presidential election can be seen by hundreds of outlets, through social trends and hashtags. We can be the outlet needed just by hitting record on our Apple or Android devices.

The articles spoke about the pro’s and cons of social media, but the pro’s by far outweigh the cons. Sure posting up pictures to your Instagram about late night drunken festivities might not be the best thing to display publicly. But that’s your choice to gain immediate attention and not caring about future consequences. We are all challenged every day to do the right or wrong thing, how you’re using social media is no different.

The ice bucket challenge was a great idea to spread awareness about motor-neurone disease, or Lou Gehrig’s disease. Even though it might be more known as a social trend by kids, challenges like these can definitely help non profit organizations and charities spread awareness with limited budget resources.

Social media is a gold mine, how it’s used comes down to the people. It can lead to a movement or a regretful post that has 25 likes. Either way you look at it, it’ll leave an impact one way or another.

Social Media

Is everyone online? what does it mean to be online?

I can remember online social network introduced itself to me around the age of 15, was when I signed up for “High5” which was reported to be the 2nd largest network platform after “Myspace” by 2007. Back then was not as intense as now, It was generally a place to showcase personalization and creativity,  chat with classmates after school, and post an occasional photo or two. Social media today have consumed us fully where we post any and everything giving full access of our personal life to the public eye. Which turns out to be  beneficial to some and to others not so much, be online has its advantages and disadvantages. for example; if your an artist and would like to showcase your work, it’s a efficient way of getting your pieces out to public. while on the other hand you post inappropriate content while apply for a professional job can interfere with the hiring process for the employer can judge you by what you post and decide your not fit for the position. One also have to be careful of the words they chose to post; according to the article ” How social media has changed us” Although it is getting harder to shield your identity anonymity has been a key piece of the internet since earlier day”. Which is the type of behavior which makes it less enjoyable to be online because to have saying something unpleasant but not having the balls to let others know you were the one typing. Personally I feel social media is a channel to get away in, learn about different cultures, meet different people, see how other use the media to meet their dreams etc…

How Social Media Has Changed the Good and The Bad. Blog #6

Social media has had such a tremendous impact on how we view our world today, that it is almost impossible  to

imagine a would without social media. Social media has a positive and negative side, it just depends on how you

utilize the network. There are many  positive aspects of  social media, for instance, social media can help people

locate their missing loved ones, social media can also help Law enforcement  capture criminals. However, on the

flip side, social media can be very  negative. For instance, some people may be suffering from depression and go

on a  social media site such as Facebook and become more depressed because they see other’s doing better than they are, but that is not the case most often  their not, it just seems as if they are.Another major Negative aspect of social media is that your information is for  the world to see.Everyone has access to your profile on way or the other. Nothing is private and nothing  it totally  deleted from your computer hard drive. Your personal information can be sold and your identity can be stolen. Finally, social media bullying has become a huge issue for our young children interacting with social media.

Homogenizing means  to form by blending  unlike element or  to make uniform or similar and this is what Facebook is currently trying to do by analyzing how consumers  shop, where they shop and their shopping habits. This Is a way Facebook can manage and market  consumers. Next, they will  have us swallow a computer chip and monitor every move  we make and monitor every penny we spend.

Social Media o_O

The affects that social media has on society has always been a very debatable topic. Reason being, like most debatable situations, there is always a party who are pro, one that’s con and another that plays natural or just agree with certain parts from both sides. I am one of the individuals who believe that the effects of social media have both positive and negative aspects. For example, since most things in our time now, has resolved into our electronic devices, it also causes us to be a part of social media (obviously). I have a lot of friends who don’t watch the new at all but are extremely caught up with current events because of social networks such as Facebook being the primary source, Instagram and even Snapchat’s “discover” section within the application. Which is why I believe this can be a positive aspect to the effects of social media because it keeps its users up to date. Now as far as the negative side of social media, it has a lot bullying that is performed by ordinary individuals, even bloggers when their speaking about a celebrity in a negative way. We also have little annoying things like a new movie that comes out and someone we follow on twitter goes to see it and then starts tweeting about the movie and ruins it for us who was looking forward to seeing it. I also feel like social media is part of the reason that our phones are always in our hand. Some of us don’t even have the respect to even put our phone away when we’re holding an in person conversation. Instead we’re constantly looking at our phone and the person we’re conversing with at the same time to give them both the same amount of attention which is so crazy. According to what Tommy Landry stated in his article, How Social Media Has Changed Us: The Good and The Bad; there is a generation of kids coming up who can’t even conceive of a world without smart phones and social networking. It has officially embedded itself in our culture. Insane right? We can’t even hold a simple conversation without picking up our phones at least one time.

How has social media effected us as a society?

I get so tired being asked this question: How has social media effected us as a society? Then, the follow-up question is: Is this in a positive or negative way? It is hard for me to decide whether or not social media has effected us as society in a positive or negative way. Pay attention to the pro and cons of public networking.

My young people, listen to me good. Are you paying attention? Be careful what you put online! I can not stretch this enough. According to a NYTimes article titled, The Web Means the End of Forgetting by Jeffrey Rosen, “Seventy percent of U.S. recruiters report that they have rejected candidates because of information found online, like photos and discussion-board conversations and membership in controversial groups”. Everything, and I mean everything, you put on the internet will be there for life. Hit the delete button. You can think that the”delete” button will make everything disappear if you want to. Everything will forever be there.

There was an essay written in 2015  name How the Technological Design of Facebook Homogenizes Identity and Limits Personal Representation by Ben Grosser stated, directly in his introduction, “Ever since its inception, people have used the technology of the Internet to represent themselves to the world”. Why do we do this? Why do we hide behind computer and phone screens because we are afraid to show people who we really are?

Don’t get me wrong. I do believe that there is a positive side to media, too. “One of the things that attracted me personally to Twitter was the immediate access to other sources of information” (Tommy Landry, Sept 2014.). I love the fact that I can have internet connection! It has made it so much more easier and simpler for me to catch up on some news and get all the latest  gossip. Its just right at my fingertips, literally!

Game Changer

Electronic video game players such as Nintendo have nothing against the advancements of today’s new technological video games. One of the many changes is the X Box which allows people to interact with other players and socialize while playing the game. People responded very positively when the X Box came out since it gave them the ability to make new friends and socialize with those who shared the same likings as them. Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality games have created a great difference in the game world. One of the most famous augmented reality games is Pokemon. Pokemon has become very famous and ever since it came out on as an app on smart phones, people have become obsessed with the game. The game allows players to play in public which makes the game a lot more phone since its connecting with the real world. An example of a virtual reality game is the PlayStation virtual reality head set. It develops a new method of playing games as it consist of total body movements. The only downside is it can make you a little dizzy. Overall, video games have come along way and all though there are many out there which I don’t agree should be in the market such as the virtual reality game of 9/11, a lot of other games have benefited our society.

Electronics Games and Entertainment Blog #5

Thirty year ago video gaming was something that kids played alone, nowadays video games  has become something for all ages to play. Years ago people had to, go to the nearest corner store that some times had a video game in the back  corner of the store or  the arcade to play video games

Electronic games, has become so interactive that a person playing has the feeling  of being apart of the game. The gaming industry has increased their awareness by making pictures more vivid, and increasing the interactive  components of the game,so that it can be more interesting and challenging for the players. Video gaming has changed in such  a way that people that play video games  no long have the  use a console they now are using hand held controllers and have the freedom to  walk around and so other things. I would not be surprised if in the future gamers can use  a voice interactive system as a replacement of a console and controller.
