Rapid Transition of Tech

JOB LOSS! I truly believe technology intelligence will eventually lead up to jobs being lost, moreover I believe it will cause more technical issues and longer wait times for something to be prepared if these devices mess up on the job. According to The Coming Merging of Mind and Machine by Ray Kurzwell, the intelligence of machines will exceed that of humans. I totally agree! Just watching how a lot of things are being merged from regular workers to devices cease to amaze me. It’s one of the most rapid transitions going on today. Let’s take a look at some simple things, you walk into some fast food restaurants now and what do you notice? An electronic menu! Which means, there goes one less job for the workers to put up the paper menus, their menus are now being controlled by someone behind the scenes. As I previously stated, technology intelligence will lead up to technical issues as well as long wait times to repair the issues. One perfect example, I once was a front of the house trainer in a restaurant called Smashburger, our menus were Tv’s turned to the side and also electronic. I can’t even begin to tell you the amount of times our menus would reboot themselves for about 15 minutes to a half an hour while we had a line full of customers, past the door curving to the bathroom. It was so embarrassing! We ended up giving them coupons and some customer just couldn’t bare to sit and wait through the rebooting and I do not blame them. We had to call “Smash Technicians” in order for them to walk us through what we can do to rush the process and no it did work out each time. So technology intelligence I would say has its convenience and inconvenience. For iPhone users, Siri in my opinion would be a technology intelligence convenience. When no one is around she got you.

Artificial Intelligence

Is artificial intelligence hurting or helping the future of computing?

In the “Coming Merging of Mind a Machine” by Ray Kurweil predict of the future with direct brain to computer access in conscious machines. Stating that the average personal computer will be equivalent to 1000 brains. This can be extremely beneficial and detrimental to society. Humans would begin to rely less on their own knowledge and become more dependent on machines. For instance, why hire a human that has to go through successions of stunningly complex patterns of interconnection among brain cells and neurotransmitters to absorb information. When you can purchase a machine that able perform all of the same duties. Kurzweil also states that within several decades, machines will exhibit the full range of human intellect emotions and skills ranging from musical and other creative aptitudes to physical movement. Given machines the ability to move and exude emotions, such as anger these Machines has the potential of becoming extremely dangerous. Irobot is a good example of how this kind of machinery can be harmful to mankind. In this movie robots were sold to the society to help out with each human specific daily tasks. After some time the robots began to exhibit human like emotion which then turn to anger and began to attack their owners even killing human because even thought they were programmed to do so.

However in the article by Markoff, inventing sensory lenses for vehicle that detects pedestrians is a great idea. Car accident has been found to be the number on way people die in the several way of transportation and has become a huge issue with children getting hit, and more. I’ve just been in a car accident myself this idea is one that should be followed up on and has been created by the way, But, all in all the more technology there is the less people actually have to compute.

Our thirst for technological improvements will one day get us all KILLED… Terminator Style

What are the consequences of technology gaining intelligence?

I do not know how I genuinely feel about the rise in technology. After reading these articles, I am still stuck in the middle in choosing between the two. One side is curious about all the new ideas and upcoming technologies soon to be invented and released. The other side is hoping the world does not change too dramatically with all the new inventions in the world because it either may be hard to catch on or technology may be too good, where machines would cause the end of the world like the movie Terminator. In one of the articles it mentions that car intelligent features are slowly coming together. The biggest concern within the creation of the feature of the car are choosing what is the best thing the car can do when in a situation of choosing the passengers life or the pedestrians life. For example, when a car with AI is programed to autonomously function, and say a pedestrian is crossing the street, would the car run over the pedestrian or swerve into a wall to save the pedestrian? I personally thought this scenario was interesting because I have not yet questioned the functions of the cars now days programed with AI. Cars, computers, and a bunch of other technologies are rapidly advancing. A robotic human clone is one of the things I am most scared of because of the functionality of a robot as it is almost perfectly programmed. I always refer back to the Terminator movies when talking about the topic of AI and Technological advancements. I truly believe the way technology is growing, maybe by the year 2100 we will have incredibly knowledgeable programed robots walking around like in movies Terminator and iRobot. According to the article The Coming Merging of Mind and Machine, it says, “By 2029 the software for intelligence will have been largely mastered, and the average personal computer will be equivalent to 1,000 brains.” This is proof that we will soon have super computers that will have an overwhelming brainpower of 1000 human being brains. This is incredible news… but just imagine the brainpower computers would have by the year 2100? Ridiculously too much function in where it would be enough to overthrow any kind of software or human being. Human intelligence vs. AI… we would stand no chance, unless the human race would destroy every server ever made and restart how life was meant to be lived the old fashioned way. Reading these articles… to answer this question… I am no fortuneteller but with the rate of rapid technological advancements… the consequences that I received from these articles are… (Reaching far out into the future for human beings…) are a war of the Human race vs. Machines maybe in the year 2200?

Artificial Intelligence

When I read this question, I automatically got an image of Arnold Schwarzenegger in Terminator! The point being is because I thought of how he was starting as a robot in that film. This moving piece of metal appeared to have more brains than a human! Watching this film made me come to the realization that I’m the next upcoming years, these things can possibly take over the world. Here why it can cause threats towards society.

A NYTimes article titled, “Should Your Drivesless Car Hit a Pedestrian to Save Your Life” by John Markoff, it states, “If its machine brain has to choose between slamming into a wall or running someone over, well, sorry pedestrian”. I thought about Will Smith in Men in Black after reading this article and about how he had no type of control of the flying vehicle while he and Tommy Lee Jones were in it. He couldn’t put his seatbelt on, let alone sit down in his seat. Although Tommy warned him to put his seatbelt on before he took off, it shows me how “aggressive” technology can be. It’s like as if their flying car had a mind of its own; it’s like Timmy didn’t even need to drive the vehicle.

“Within several decades, machines will exhibit the full range of human intellect, emotions, and skills, ranging from musical and other creative aptitude to physical movements” (The Coming Merging of Mind and Machine, Ray Kurzweil). I personally don’t like the whole idea of cyber objects coming into play. Sure, they can have some good to them, but, they can eventually turn deadly. Take, for example, the movie “I, Robot”, also starring Will Smith. The robots in that movie appeared to be nice and helpful in society, but something trigger something off in them, which turned them into these harmful machines. They all had to be reset in order for them to be properly functioning again. I don’t know about everyone else, but the whole idea of having someone’s emotions turned on and off just with a click of a button.

In an article titled, “Alternative Essence of Intelligence”,it states, “Humans are not born with complete reasoning systems, complete motor systems, or complete sensory systems”. I’ll agree with this statement, however pay attention to one thing: It states, “humans are born with”, not “humans and robots are born with”. Humans are born and robots are made, which is why I feel there should be no debate as to whether or not technology should advance into these objects.

Is Artificial intelligence hurting or helping the future of computing

Artificial intelligence  can be  harmful  as well as beneficial to the future  of computing.

The negative aspect of artificial intelligence  may be that  it  will limit  the human power and

replace it with a robot that is programmed  to follow  the same sort  of development path that

humans follow.Replacing  robots  for humans can pose many threats  and problems as far

as malfunctioning  and reprogramming issues.Artificial  intelligence devices are rapidly  taking over

our day to day activities and routines.Another negative aspect of  humanoid robots is  that they are

not social beings, therefore there is no social interaction with a robot. You can not ask a robot how is your

day going our how do you feel today? According to the article on”Alternative Essence Of Intelligence”

humans  have the capability to receive an enormous amount  of information from the world visual, auditory and somatosensory. However, the positive notations of a humanoid robot intelligence is that  for some companies

and coporations it is  ficinally beneficial because it gets certins task done  in an efficient and timly  manner and it

saves money and time.also companies  would not have to worry about health insurace benefits when  humans are replaced by robots. Therefore, artificial  intelligence  sever as both  a postitive and negative depending on your view on it and what usefulness does it have to an indivisual  and a cooperaton. In My opinion artificial  intelligence  will help other tremendously if used correctly. We all can benefit from the helping hand of artificial intelligence.

Drones

Drones are popular flying video cameras that have been trending lately. People have been using it to shoot amazing videos of beautiful places and even to record themselves or a group of friends from high above. Amazing Prime has also been involved in using drones and has now come up with the idea of using them to drop off items to clients on same day or even less than one hour delivery which would benefit a lot of people who need their products quickly. Although drones have been a great hobby and have helped many companies and even the military, it has become a little dangerous. One of the reasons drones are not so safe is because it can crash into buildings, people or even airplanes. Can you imagine if a drone crashed into an airplane and stopped the plain from working? That would be horrific. Drones can even crash into someone and cause major injuries. Another reason why drones are dangerous is because it can be used to transport drugs from one country to the next such as from Mexico to USA. Although many have been caught there are still those who have been able to make sure the delivery gets through without a problem. This is why I think its a good idea for drones to now have a serial number that can detect who the drone belongs to. That way people are more skeptical of committing a crime and that can lower the rate of the drug transport.

How are Drones Influencing Commerce and Surveillance in the Media?

You can see drones slowly getting more involved into activities, hobbies and military uses. But some people believe that though, not all drones are the same, they are still can be harmful. “not every drone carries a missile… all drones carry the burden that comes with being an instrument of tremendous power.” People think there is a flaw to these machines, as Janet Burns article shows, these robots can be easily hacked into and used to invade peoples privacy and can be knocked out of the sky and stolen. Drones cover a lot of grown from the angle they are in, and can see anywhere and everywhere. It didn’t take long for the students to hack into one of the “guinea pig” drones and completely confuse it. This can create a threat to “hobby-type” drones that are used for photography and video, to soon to come commercial delivery drones, that can be forcibly tell the drone to land or deliver the item to a different location.

If these projects show how easy it is to infiltrate into these devices, then what can we do with the military drones? How useful are they? How can they be improved? Yes they are used for our safety, and also research, but drone influence with surveillance can not be that impactful if it can be easily manipulated. I think there is a lot of room for improvement with drones.

How are drones influencing commerce and surveillance in the media?

Drones have become very big in the media industry in the past couple years, from seeing aerial views of places no one could reach or by just getting a grand picture of an event to show its size and popularity; they’re even used in music videos. Drones have become a problem as well though be use with every good use there is people using them for bad as well. The article “A World of Proliferated Drones” by Kelley Sayler asks some very important questions “Are states more likely to engage in cross-border surveillance missions or attacks with drones than with manned systems? Are states more willing to shoot down a drone, since there is no one on board? If one nation shoots down another nation’s drone, is that an act of war?” this impacts the privacy of us Americans and of everyone around the world because these drones can go undetected by us everyday people who can be watched especially because they can be hacked while in flight and some are even carrying weapons that can be controlled from anywhere if hacked. Drones are definitely influencing commerce and surveillance because they are becoming more and more useful to every aspect of media. we also see drone use in our military and how advance the technology has become.

Is going Open Source a viable business model?

When I think of open source I think of a saying my grandmother use to say, “ too many chefs in the pot will ruin the broth” I don’t believe that open source is the best business model for every business. For example in one of the readings, ‘The Political Economy of Open Source Software’ by Steven Weber starts off telling us that The ingredients to Coca-Cola is on the can but not the process of how they are combined into making the popular drink. If this was open source and anyone could access how to make it, the company would crumble and would not be who they are today. I also believe that open source can be helpful though if it is helping a greater cause that is positive to the masses. I watched a movie called “The Internets own boy” where this talented programmer was leaking public files that people were being charged for to the public because he believed that big business shouldn’t profit off the public’s right to knowledge. I believe in this case JStar, the company he stole from, should have been open source and allowed the public access to the knowledge they deserved to readily access. Instead they got hacked and the files were accessible by the public. Open source can be good and bad but it depends on the field.

Drones

Drones are affecting the media because they are much more useful and popular now more than ever before. Reading the third article people can use drones to hack into computer software or any device and steal information. The drones are very small and people cannot see them and how they are hacking into their software. This is a genius thing to do but it hurts our media because of it’s unknown way of doing this. In new York city I don’t see a lot of drones at all and that may be a bad thing because our surveillance needs to be better here because of how big the population is. The drones are great for surveillance and capturing thieves robbing and stealing. The hack part is messed up and that’s why I am 50-50 on if we need them moving forward into our future.
