Is artificial intelligence hurting or helping the future of computing?

Artificial Intelligence helps the future of computing, as it further advances the capabilities of devices and their functioning. According to the article, “The Coming Merging of Mind and Machine”, within several decades, machines will exhibit the full range of human intellect, emotions and skills, ranging from musical and other creative aptitudes to physical movement. That’s pretty weird to think about as technology is so advanced today already, but just lacking the emotional connect and creativity. For example, Siri is a type of artificial intelligence we use on the daily. Once computers achieve a level of intelligence comparable to that of humans, they will necessarily soar past it. Once computers surpass us the need for humans to perform certain jobs will end and will eventually be replaced by robots. Artificial intelligence also has its cons such as the lack of morality and being able to make moral decisions. For example, when it comes to self driving cars humans must come to an agreement about what would be the best outcome of an accident in any scenario. Does it make sense for the equipment to save more lives of pedestrians or the passengers of such a vehicle. The pros of artificial intelligence definitely outweigh its cons so I completely believe it’s helping the future of computing.

Artificial Intelligence

Intelligence possessed by computers allows the machine to perceive its environment and takes instructions to maximizes the chance of success. Which have several advantages, that adds a help to the very busy lifestyles present humans holds. It reduces the chances for error and the goal for accuracy are mostly achieved, artificial intelligence (robots) is able to find applications in space explorations and can be used to explore space, intelligent machines can also be employed to do certain dangerous jobs, They also do not require sleep or breaks and are able to function without stopping. With several advantages, there are a few disadvantages like, artificial intelligence is expensive and do occasionally require maintenance and repair, if intelligent machines fall into the wrong hands it can cause destruction. I personally feel the good outdo the bad and artificial intelligence has mold our universe into what it is now and benefits our lifestyle with efficiency.

Technology is taking over our lives

Slowly but surely, technology has taken over our lives. There are many things we do that does require the use of technology and it is the primary tool we use to communicate to one another or most importantly learn. On the bright side, although we use technology so much more than we realize, it has made our lives much easier. We cannot allow our gadgets to take over our lives though. We must find balance between using technology and living lives that are not based solely on technology. The excessive use of technology has slowed down the human development in some humans and our social skills are not as great. We have forgotten how to communicate to one another on a personal level without having to use our text messages, facebooks, twitters and even instagram. These platforms have led us to forget intimacy with one another and we have been sucked up on this world that is not so real anymore. We have also been so absorbed with our gadgets that we forget the outside world and what’s going on around us. That’s where the danger comes in. World events are not discussed personally anymore and are argued through technology which doesn’t make it so intimate. We have to find equilibrium with technology because even our personalities have been missunderstood because text messages and dm’s do not allow the real us to be shown as the person on the other hand might perceive us different then we really are.

What are the Consequences of Technology Gaining Intelligence?

The consequences of technology gaining intelligence is the loss of human control. “The intelligence that we are creating in computers will soon exceed the intelligence of it’s creators.” Machines will soon take over! And won’t need us to upgrade and advance them as we use to, they will learn on their own. Machines are learning to have human intellect, emotions and skill that are improving faster than humans have ever had. Gaining skills such as creativity, musical aptitudes and physical movement. “They claim to have feelings,” but are they real feelings? Or artificial? Researchers try using pieces of human brains to decode and understand the brains process of information.

The way technology processes information and how they make decisions are based on how we program it, but if they have their own minds and develop a way to think for them self we lose control on what they can do and the future of how things are done. Do robots have morality? Can you give it moral decisions? In John Markoff’s article, they struggle to answer those same questions. A computer or robot… driving you to a destination, something happens where it’s left with a choice, you hit a wall and potentially die? or hit a civilian and live? I’m pretty sure everyone would want to live, but does that make it right?

It comes down to the question, what makes one life more valuable than the other? Why should one person die and the other live? Does the robot create an algorithm for that? …and then after the choice, who is to blame? What is the consequence of killing a person in this scenario?

What are the consequences of technology gaining intelligence?

The consequences of technology gaining intelligence are multiple and what I think is that robots will never become humans being but they will become superior than them through artificial Intelligence.

It is an indisputable fact that robots will become better than humans in carrying out tasks that require an ability to analyze the environment and this a very good consequences. And it is not so much Artificial Intelligence that allows this tilting as the perfecting of the sensors: the robots hear, see and feel much better than we do. Moreover, since the information processed by these sensors can be crossed with data that already exist – via the Internet or big data – robots will develop a gigantic analysis capacity! (very good consequences!)

Some people see a very positive aspect by the fact that this technology will be useful for human. But some other people see a negative aspect and are afraid of this technolgy. They are afraid that one day, as the robot will be more intelligent than humans, he could probably kill a human being. For me, as far as the problem of robot responsibility is concerned, a pragmatic approach should be adopted. I really don’t think that this day will come. I think that we are too much influenced by films and series where we see these kind of idea but in reality if a robot is non-programmed to kill someone then there is no risk.

There will be a risk only if a human creates a robot in the purpose of killing people. Robots and artificial intelligence are not dangerous.

Actually, human is the real threat..

Artificial Intelligence…Making Moral Decisions?

What are the consequences of technology gaining intelligence?

“As autonomous vehicles edge closer to reality, it has also become a philosophical question with business implications. Should manufacturers create vehicles with various degrees of morality”…
– “Should Your Driverless Car Hit a Pedestrian to Save Your Life?”, John Markoff, June 2016.

The world of technology and artificial intelligence is steadily developing as researchers create new ways for the consumer to be conveniently accommodated. In today’s society we have cars such as, Tesla that are able to go autopilot, so that the driver can be driven around automatically without having to steer the wheel or direct the car manually. These artificial intelligence vehicles and devices are built solely to protect the owner and get them to where they need to go. But, with these machines can come defects as well as harm to humans because these machines are programmed to make “moral” decisions for your best interest. What people don’t think about is what Markoff mentioned in his article about the autonomous vehicles for example, he talks about what if your vehicle has to decided between hitting a pedestrian on the road or going over a cliff just to save your life, if it’s built to protect the owner then it’s going to hit that pedestrian in order to keep you alive. My first Bachelor’s degree is in the Field of Philosophy where we talk a lot about moral ambiguity, existence, etc. But, in this case
Dealing with the issue artificial intelligence making moral decisions, that’s a matter dealing with moral philosophy which will takes a look at the concepts of what is right and what is wrong.

“Once computers achieve a level of intelligence comparable to that of humans, they will necessarily soar past it”.
-“The Coming Merging of Mind and Machine”, Ray Kurzweil, September 1999.

The consequences of technology gaining intelligence is that it can do more harm than good because these artificial beings aren’t human, they aren’t born with a conscience, neither can they appropriately distinguish between right and wrong, The very fact that they are mechanical makes much wrong for trial and error, mechanical flaws, mishaps, etc. because after a period of time just like any machine, things can go wrong.

Drones

What is the impact of drones on the future of communications and efficiency?

i think the future of drones is big and bright and hopefully used for more good than bad. Though in the article written in Forbes it highlights how drones were used to show security flaws Within them. One of my biggest concerns is that these drones grow in size and can be hacked and used to hurt people. Or possibly used for terrorism because it is quite difficult to get them down while they’re maneuvering in the air. I do believe there was an issue months ago about a drone flying into the White House lawn exposing flaws within the White House security. I do also believe that drones can be used for journalism and news coverage to get into places where maybe you physically can’t. Or maybe where people are protesting you can capture what’s going on right in the middle of it and bring that news to light. It allows you to do things you physically can’t showing that it is more than just a toy but something with much more potential.

A.I.

Humanity is the apex predator on the planet. We can do whatever we want. We can kill every species, we can destroy the planet and everything on it. That’s something a gorilla can’t do, something a dolphin can’t do. That’s something with a human mind can do. Now the question is, what if there was something smarter than us, what can they do?

Imagine shutting down your computer and the computer realizes it’s being shut down and tells you not turn it off or even finds a way to stay on since its already connected. “we will learn to program intelligence by copying the best intelligent entity we can get our hands on: the human brain itself.”  The Coming Merging of Mind and Machine.

Apps like Siri, even though its not a machine can be small insight to how A.I. can work. You ask a question and Siri gets you the answer. But what if Siri had to make choices or machine for that matter. What will it choose? Who wil benefit from its decisions. The New York Times articles talks about right and wrong and the grey area of moral decisions. Whose lives are more important, yours or a strangers? According to the “Three Laws of Robotics” by Issac Asimov, robots wouldn’t be able to make these decisions “A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm. A robot must obey orders given it by human beings except where such orders would conflict with the First Law. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.”

But a robot will eventually be smarter than us and will be able to figure out a way to bend these laws. “the intelligence that we are now creating in computers will soon exceed the intelligence of its creators.” The Coming Merging of Mind and Machine. If this is true and it does happen, we will no longer have to fear ourselves but fear what we created.

What are the consequences of technology gaining intelligence?

Technology gaining intelligence comes with many risk and consequence. The intelligence and moral aspects have to be programmed and would sensuality up to the programmer what the technology would do or react in a time of crisis. Who should these decisions be up to? Who should the technology is programmed to save? “Through a series of quizzes that present unpalatable options that amount to saving or sacrificing yourself — and the lives of fellow passengers who may be family members — to spare others, the researchers, not surprisingly, found that people would rather stay alive.” I would say let the person’s morals be programmed into the vehicles because if they were driving the car the decisions made in a crisis situation would be the morals of that person anyway. If the technology intelligence was modeled after the human brain I may feel more trusting of this technology. “Ultimately, however, we will learn to program intelligence by copying the best intelligent entity we can get our hands on: the human brain itself.” This would resemble another human behind the wheel or in the device. What if the intelligence get to smart and want to do it’s own thing because it feels it has it’s own mind? “A frequent criticism of predictions is that they rely on an unjustified extrapolation of current trends, without considering the forces that may alter those trends”. “Tay was an artificial intelligence chatterbox released by Microsoft corp. on March 23, 2016. Tay caused controversy on Twitter by releasing inflammatory tweets and it was taken offline around 16 hours after its launch. Tay was accidentally reactivated on March 30, 2016, and then quickly taken offline again. This was a disaster; he was offending so many people, because he got smarter and feed off other people tweets. I believe that eventually AI will be perfected and there will be AI helping humans in everyday life activities.” We claim that our goal of creating a learning, scalable, intelligent system, with competencies similar to human beings, is altogether relevant in trying to solve a broad class of real-world situated problems. We further believe that the principles of development, social interaction, physical coupling to the environment, and integration are essential to guide us towards our goal.”

What are the consequences of technology gaining intelligence?

The the consequences of technology gaining intelligence is that it’s a great idea until it isn’t. I feel like technology gaining intelligence will force people out of jobs, will make them lazier and dumber at the same time. Certain skills that we practice everyday or things that stimulate our minds will not be stimulated anymore. Causing us to lose skills that we gained while growing up. And also what about kids growing up during this time, they won’t develop common skills that their parents did. Also. Hacking. Our minds cannot be hacked but technology can. It’ll be extremely dangerous if we depend on artificial intelligence and then somehow everything gets hacked and or everything stops working. Those who never developed those same skills will have no clue what to do in times like those.
