Media has affected us as a society in a very positive way. Media has helped us communicate with each other and has helped us keep up to date with things that are happening around the world. Social media sites such as Facebook, twitter, Instagram, and snap chat has helped us communicate with one another differently. In the reading it talks about how kids use social media and how it benefits them. I think for kids social media is very negative because it takes away the face to face and in person communication. I believe that kids should be more interactive with each other and need to learn how to speak between one another. I think people become shy and hide behind social media at times and if kids are exposed to this very young, it can damage the face to face conversation at a young age. The reading shows a few benefits that does help kids like enhancing their reading skills and their health information. The kids growing up now are much smarter because they are learning through a screen. It is much easier to learn how to read and access information. I think media has affected us more positive than negative because social media is a choice. You don’t have to use it, but you can if you want to. A lot of the negatives with social media can be avoided. I use social media here and there but it doesn’t control my life. I can live without social media but the internet and access to information is a big positive in 2016. It’s easier and better to be able to find information about anything with an instant click. In the Facebook article, I can see where journalism is taking a hit. This is because there is no need to get a newspaper anymore because you can find the news on Facebook with an instant click. It’s easier access. I like the comparison in the article about how music today is bought online not in the CD stores. This is very true and all the CD and DVD stores are pretty much shut down because of the internet.

How has media effected us as a society? Is this positive or negative?
As seen in the article of Ravi Somaiya the media had a huge impact because we can see that there is about 1.3 billion people logging on at least monthly. It drives up to 20 percent of traffic to news sites. So, it represents a huge business for who knows how to use it.
Facebook has definitely changed the way on how people consume journalism because they do not read the newspaper itself, but only the news that appears on their Facebook. And the fact is that Facebook select which kind of news the user will might want to read (thanks to an algorithm as stated in the article of Ravi Somaiya). The impact of such thing is that it has an impact on how people will see the world because they are enclosed within their sphere.
About these facts, I would say that it is positive in a way that people can read several articles from different newspaper on a same platform (Facebook) but it is negative in a way that people lose physical interactions by taking news only through Facebook and not anymore outside by buying the newspaper.
According to the second article we can see several things on how the media has affected us as a society.
In a positive aspect, thanks to the media, we are nowadays able to share our information as long as we want to share it and this lead to the fact that a person can become someone famous without having any big resources. I would call this the principle of the “autonomous business” because someone can achieve great things with just a laptop or even a Smartphone.
Media creates new technologies continuously which can be helpful for your health, education, shopping etc.
We communicate better and you can accelerate the process of your career thanks to some tools like LinkedIN and thus find a job.
In a negative aspect, the media and mainly social media can be a source of corruption for young people nowadays. It can lead to several negative aspects like being insulted or the depression just because you don’t have enough “likes” on your Facebook’s posts. And as said at the beginning the notion of being away of physical interactions can lead to an anti-social position.

How has media effected us as a society? Is this positive or negative?
With all things, you have to out weigh the good and the bad. Social media is no different. Sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube can keep society updated in current events in a matter of seconds.
In a way, we all can be journalists with our media apps. We can be in the middle of a protest and see exactly whats going on with someones video tweet. Where as before, we would have to wait for the morning edition of the newspaper or morning news.
The New York Times article, “How Facebook is Changing the way Its Users Consume Journalism” by Ravi Somaiya talks about how algorithm is used through search engines and social media to show what the user wants to read.
“The social media company is increasingly becoming to the news business what Amazon is to book publishing,” Somaiya said.
On the other hand, social media can be harmful if not used properly. Anthony Weiner, former Congressman of New York, was forced to resign after the first of what would be many sexting scandals were made public.
Sexting “Sending, receiving, or forwarding sexual explicit messages, photos, or images via cellphone, computer, or other digital device.” American Academy of Pediatrics.
This problem doesn’t occur only to political figures, it also involves everyday people, especially teens. Sexting as a teen can lead child pornography charges, school suspensions and emotional distress.
It doesn’t stop with sexting, cyber-bulling and privacy issues also comes with social media. This happens to both adults and teenagers. You can never be too careful with what you put online.
Cyber-bulling, can lead to depression and even suicide if not handled quickly or correctly.
In most cases, social media can be a great thing to have. You just have to be well informed of what it can bring.

Blog Post 1
A question has risen from the research conducted on today’s social media questioning some of the effects of social media on society? Are these effects positive or negative? According to New York Times, “How Facebook is Changing the way its Users Consume Journalism” by Ravi Somaiya. Social media has become societies number one way of receiving daily updates on present events. For instants, Facebook has a fifth of the world; about 1.3 billion people logging on at least monthly. With each individual’s news feed designed to produce and generate stories that are most appealing to them and of their interest. It makes the use of social media more desirable because now you’re viewing videos and stories that intrigues them. A topic that tends to flood my fees would be would be the #Blacklivesmatter movement. Social media websites such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube has made it easier for people to socialize within groups directly as well as through the sharing of knowledge which is mostly done on YouTube. People are now able to organize rallies protest and spark controversy by the click or sending of a status. Social media has become the key to all social interactions whether they are online or off-line. In saying this I mean most conversations held offline stems from online controversies steaming up debates on situations online and issues online is taking into the off-line world to be discussed and deliberate on the whether beginning conversation of whether one believes the issue to be morally right, morally wrong or worthy of recognition. However social media has its positive effects as well as its negative, on social media you are able to find a massive population of preadolescence and adolescence, who are now vulnerable and exposed to sexual predators. These preadolescence adolescence viewers and users are usually subjective to a lot of different ideas created by via websites and/ or by a person online. With the new phenomenon of online, sexting, texting, and sharing of semi-nudes and nudes they are now subjects of child pornography, which can later hinder them from future endeavors. Cyber bullying is also a huge issue amongst the pre adolescence and adolescence social media users, when a child of such a young age experiences this kind of humiliation embarrassment from via social media. They can experience issues with isolation in Zaidi depression and even sometimes lead to tragic suicides.

How has media effected us as a society? Is this positive or negative?
In the designated articles, “Clinical Report—The Impact of Social Media on Children, Adolescents, and Families” and “How Facebook Is Changing the Way Its Users Consume Journalism” we can comprehend that the Media is proven to be both beneficial and a source of corruption to the generation of today. Media is not a bad as what these articles have shared. I believe Media should be viewed as a positive platform in which individuals can share, explore, view, and grow as a person. All of these media platforms such as YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat all can be used for financial passive and residual gain if one has built a large client/viewer base. The world of today is based all around the Media and with the world today… it cannot be avoided, it will only continue to evolve and transpire. Media creators and technicians year by year are on a mission to build financial gain by a constant upbringing of something new to the table for consumers, where things would be more user friendly, appealing to the eye, luxurious, informative, etc. Media can transform people from the large amounts of information they would have access too on the Internet. What I find most interesting within media is the fact that you can have access to many different methods and strategies in which a person can build themselves. Anything that has to do with self-building, motivating, and change of perception for the better or a positive proven approach a person can attempt to try… I am in full supportive of it. In life people are not given an instruction manual in which they should live life a certain way. With the media, I feel it gives individuals a better chance and opportunity to find self-empowerment and become the powerful person they were always meant to be.

Social Media affect on society
Social Media has a great impact on our culture, our businesses and just about everything pertaining to everyday life. Social media, I believe has impacted our society positively more times than it has negatively. Social media has revolutionized the way people communicate through the internet.Through media we are given a news source, current events of areas and how others live. Social media sites have also served to bring people together for a cause, inspiring many mass movements. Social media also plays a critical role in politics today all around the world. One of the most negative ways social media affects our society is by cyberbullying and online harassment, according to the clinical report done by The American Academy of Pediatrics. Researchers have also proposed a new phenomenon called “Facebook Depression”, usually when teens use social media sites in excess and then begin to show classic signs of depression.

Social Media Impacts
When anyone gets into some sort of conversation about the way media has impacted our society; this particular conversation turns into a very complex conversation. My personal belief on why that is, is because media has both positive and negative effects on society today. Some of the good that media has on us is keeping us updated with what’s going on throughout the world, keeping in contact with important individuals, getting back in contact with individuals, also ways to promote and market ourselves etc. As for some negative effects, some naïve individuals who decide to date online and sometimes end up with a horrific outcome such as being catfished, being raped and or killed, getting their reputation wrecked from poor decisions, cyber-bullying etc. but I also believe that anything that has been created, clearly has some sort of concept. The creators obviously want their creations to be used and taken advantage of but becoming popular and consistently used is a plus. According to the New York Times article How Facebook Is Changing The Way Its Users Consume Journalism about 30% of adults in the United States get their news on Facebook, which relates to one of the positives I previously stated about social media, it can keep you up to date. One negative that I found very interesting within this reading would defiantly have to be a study that was done by Pew Research Center, the fortunes of a news site can rise or fall depending on how it performs on Facebook news feed. Which in my opinion means, because Facebook is linked to so many different things and or social media corporations, they are most likely ruining some businesses if it seems to be something that becomes popular and useful on the actual Facebook website. So Facebook is one of the top social media websites that has a huge impact on society worldwide.

Effects of social Media
Social Media is the new wave in the 21st century, it has pro’s and con’s which I agree with; that the first article elaborated on. Like how, it’s an everyday routine activity used to communicate and stay connected with friends and family from all corners of the world, which is efficient and quick. Social media allows everyone to share photos, videos, ideas, engage in important debates, and get information about your surroundings/community.
while on the other hand social media, also gives away the meaning of privacy. By displaying everything about your life it is very easy for individuals to know what’s going on in your private settings. Individuals know your whereabouts easier which can bring self endangerment. I also feel like social media has replaced outdoor activities, such as tennis, basket ball, football and more, kids are not really interested in extra curricular activities compared to years ago. They prefer playing indoor games which have social media channels incorporated in them such as snap chat, Instagram, Facebook and twitter. In addition, these social media platforms also cause individuals to fall into depression by observing and comparing one’s lifestyle to theirs. One might not get as much likes on a picture compared to another which can cause low self-esteem.
Personally, social media has not affected me negatively. I feel like social media gives my generation a platform for us to display our talents and interest to world, which can later on give us opportunities.

Social Media and Society

According to both articles Social media has transformed the way society gets information. This is a good and bad thing for our society. Both articles agree that Facebook and other social media sites are basic outlets for “millennia’s” to retrieve their news/information. Many young people benefit from social media learning how to communicate and be social. The new technological advances even allow professors to create blogging sites to interact with students. But these social sites also make pre-teens, teenagers, and young adults vulnerable to prey such as cyber bullies, catfishes, pedophiles and “Facebook depression” the need to feel accepted by peers. When parents are not tech savvy, there’s a greater risk for young people to be expose to these dangers. “What goes online stays online” this is important for young people to remember, or what they post online could one day come back to haunt them later in life when looking for jobs etc.
“Roughly once a week people come together in a team to adjust the complex code that decides what to show a user when they first login”, the first article warns us about this the “influence of advertisements on buying” and the same thing for what we read on line, to the suggest friends feeds off your profile and gives you suggestions.
Smartphones has become “needed” to the average young person because of it convenience and abilities such as apps, social media allowing us to connect with people from all over the world, handling bank accounts, internet and so much more. The more traditional means of media such as television, radio, Newspapers are all becoming a thing of the past. Having social media and Internet is a way you can customize what you want to watch and see allowing you to skip and scroll past what you want. So why would you go for the daily news paper when your Facebook feed is like your own “personalized Newspaper”

The Effects Media Has on a Nation
I would have to say that media has effected society in a tremendous way. Some may think it has a positive effect on the public; others may think it has a negative effect. I, myself, would have to say that I am caught in between both. Why, you might ask? Please, allow me to explain why it is hard for me to choose whether or not media is “good” or “bad”.
Let me start off by discussing the importance of media. According to The American Academy of Pediatrics, “Social media sites such as Facebook and Myspace offer multiple daily opportunities for connecting with friends, classmates, and people with shared interest”. Just reading this line puts a smile on my face because it shows how we all can be connected with someone without having to be physically in front of them. For example, you can be father fighting overseas at war who can not physically be around their family twenty-four seven. This is where media comes into play. That father can easily go on their phone to FaceTime their wife and children to make sure of their well-being.
On the contrary, media has some negative effects to it, too. According to New York Times, “…Facebook is at the forefront of a fundamental change in how people consume journalism”. What does this mean? It means that society is spending more time logged onto Facebook and less time picking up a book to read. It saddens me how people can invest so much energy in “posting a status” instead of analyzing the thoughts of Charles Dickens. The time you took in signing into Facebook you could have consumed in reading whole chapter in a book!
In the words of Sherry Turkle of TEDTalks, “I’m still excited about technology, but I believe that we’re letting it take us places that we don’t want to go”. This is exactly how I feel. I like technology and how it is so convenient, but I feel like people abuse it and should limit how much they use it.
